The mitochondria is basically the "power house" of the cell. It creates ATP by the use of Krebs cycle and such. The cell uses ATP for all of its function's the mitochondria is a very important part of the cell. Without it'd fail to function.

The mitochondria cells help the cell itself to put out wastes that the cell has. By the way this is written by a 10 year old in 5th grade so if you didn't learn this in 5th grade it's because you were not paying attention to you're teacher!
