It should be pretty darned good!
My '96, with 199,000 on the odometer,
does right around 28-32 with the AC off.
Naturally it drops a couple MPG with the AC on.
Bear in mind, that your mileage may vary ;)
Keeping your engine in good tune, and watching
your tires for proper inflation will make a big
difference.

if you're going through the trouble of dropping the fuel tank, I'd just put a new one in and be done with it
