Italy is a primarily mountainous country. The Alps form an arch which runs along most of its borders (with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia). The Apennines is a mountain chain which starts from the Italy-France border and runs along the Ligurian (northwestern) coast, and through the length of the peninsula and continues all along Calabria (the toe of Italy). In the north there is a massive plain between the Alps and the Apennines which runs from near Turin to Venice. Apulia, (the heel of Italy) is a large pain area. Other plains are on the coastal part of Campania (the region whose capital is Naples) Lazio and Tuscany.
