Nothing at all. Meditation has no goal. There is nothing to gain. If that is so, someone once asked the Buddha, why meditate? His answer: "Let me tell you what I lost through meditation: sickness, anger, depression, insecurity, the burden of old age, the fear of death. That is the good of meditation, which leads to nirvana" [unbinding].
Goal oriented behaviour (Deciding what you want to do then working towards it in an orderly fashion) is not a consideration in Buddhist meditation. In many ways it is a pause from pursuing goals. The goal of meditation is to release yourself from goal seeking and seek an appreciation of where you are. In the Zen story a student wants to achieve enlightenment and promises to his master that he will meditate daily. "That will take many years" says the master. "Then I will meditate for hours each day" says the student. "That will extend your task many decades" says the master. "Then I will meditate unceasingly" says the student. "And never be enlightened" says the master. The harder you try the further it puts you from your goal.
Essentially, the goal (if such a practice can be said to have a goal) is that we maintain awareness and mindfulness at all times- which is, I suppose, tantamount to saying we try to stay in a meditative state.
It could help as part of a total program of weight loss that includes eating the right foods in the right amounts and exercising. Meditation helps you manage stress, and a lot of people overeat when they are stressed out. This is likely to be the way that meditation would help you lose weight.Affirmations could be considered a form of meditation, and choosing affirmations that remind you of your goal ("I eat well and take care of my body") and instill confidence ("I can do this!") can help you. Louise Hay has written books on affirmations that are helpful for any personal goal.
A straight line is the shortest distance between two points. In meditation, a straight line is the shortest distance between you and your goal. Straight line meditation is meditation minus the wandering: the new feedback meditation method.
