Ben Cayetano (born November 14, 1939 in Honolulu, Hawaii) succeeded John Waihee as the fifth Governor of Hawaii, serving between December 2, 1994 and December 2, 2002, including the whole of 2001.
The six Governors of the State of Hawaii include William F. Quinn who was the last Territorial Governor and the last Republican Governor for 40 years until Lina Lingle became the Governor in 2002. The Democratic years saw a Montana born Governor who spent most of his youth in Hawaii, George Ariyoshi the first Japanese-American Governor (born in Honolulu), and the fourth Governor who was of Native Hawaiian decent and was born on the Big Island was John Waihe'e III.
Ben Cayetano became the fifth governor and the first Filipino US governor, and was born in Honolulu but went to the "lower 48" for his college education. Governor Lingle was born in St. Louis, Missouri, raised and educated in California and she became Maui's first woman and youngest mayor as well as the first female Governor of the state.
As a footnote to Hawaii's Gubenetorial history, another name from Hawaiian politics should at least be mentioned because of his search for that office without success. Frank Francis Fasi, born in Hartford, Connecticut and the longest serving Mayor of Honolulu. He ran against Ariyosha for Governor in 1974 and lost in the primary and ran against Ariyosha in the 1978 primary and lost. He ran in the 1982 General election and lost. He ran in 1994 and lost. He retired from politics at the age of 84 after losing the office of Mayor or Honolulu. He died in Honolulu in 2010 at the age of 89.
The current Governor of Hawaii is Neil Abercrombie (D). Abercrombie assumed office as the 7th Governor of Hawaii on December 6, 2010.
