This is a very touchy subject as there are too many variables.

The s-10 is considered a half ton truck, but the factory acknowledges that a properly laden s-10 has a GCVWR(gross combined vehicle weight rating) of 8500 lbs. That means that a truck that weighs empty(but full of fuel) at 4150lbs has a probable capacity of 4350 lbs;this figure includes: passengers, cargo in the bed and if applicable, the trailer tongue weight.

An s-10 loaded to this extrerme would be a very difficult vehicle to maintain safe control under all but level terrain, they are simply too light duty for this weight.

I have found that about 1500lbs in an s-10 is the maximum safe limit without comprimising vehicle safety and without stressing suspension and brake components.
