student and lay movements in the 19th century & conferences suggested a fellowship of churches. leaders for more than 100 churches voted for WCC in 1937 - 1938, but was delayed due to WWII. After the war the council came into being at the first assembly in 1948. There were 147 member churches and it evolved in profile and identity in the 1960's.
Churches existed before WW2 and existed after WW2. A few churches were destroyed as part of the collateral damage related to the conflict.
