The Amazigh were actually some of the earliest and proudest Christians. Tertullian, Cyprian, and Augustine were all Amazigh. However, different Amazigh tribes chose not to convert to Christianity and remained Jewish or Animist/Polytheist. When the Muslims conquered North Africa in the 7th century, a large number of Christian Amazigh converted to Islam. The remainder would convert to Islam over the centuries (except a small minority of Amazigh - especially the Jewish Amazigh) because of the second-class status given to Christians.

Christianity had a significant presence among the Berber people of North Africa in the early centuries, especially in regions like Numidia. Many Berbers converted to Christianity and there were prominent Berber Christian leaders like St. Augustine. However, the spread of Islam in the region led to the decline of Christianity among the Berber population. Today, Christianity is a minority religion among the Berber people in North Africa.
