Hawaii was formed from underwater volcanoes that continuously erupted for years until the lava rose from the ocean and created the islands. Thousands of years ago many people in Polynesia became unhappy with the harshness of the "god's" punishment in the belief system practiced in those islands. So, the unhappy islanders packed up their families & possessions into outriggers (canoes) and paddled north to find their own land. There is an ancient story telling that the people who paddled to Hawaii had followed "Mano" the shark to the islands. They got to Hawaii and flourished.
In the 1700's Captain Cook came across Hawaii (naming the islands the Sandwich Islands) while on a journey to find a ocean route around the world. The Hawaiian Islands then became a regular stop for the big fishing ships from Europe & America, eventually the ships brought missionaries, who some blame for corrupting the peaceful, happy lives of the natives. As time wore on, the islands became more & more popular to visit & live, now it is a hot spot for vacationers from around the world & has been commercialized beyond recognition from the once pristine tropical paradise.
