In a nutshell:

  • William Dampier was the first Englishman to land on Australia's shores, doing so on the northwest coast in 1688. He was so unimpressed with Australia that he made no recommendation at all to the British government to settle there. Dampier returned 11 years later, in 1699, and still had the same opinion.
  • James Cook first sailed up the eastern coast in 1770 and, unlike his predecessor, saw the potential of the land. He claimed the eastern half for Great Britain, under the name of "New South Wales".
  • The First Fleet of convicts arrived in Port Jackson, NSW on 26 January 1788, carrying just over 700 convicts, of whom about 170 were women. The First Fleet was under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip. This was the first English (and European) settlement in Australia.
