holds it in that perticular gear.

Check that the overdrive button on the gear shifter is not disengaged that will cause it to come on.

The S button on top of the gear shifter stands for sport mode. it makes the car shift smother in faster take off

4th gear
There is a small button on the shifter knob just below the large button that you press to change shifter positons.
overdrive button is located on gear shifter on automatice transmission.
You have two lights on dashboard which are linked to your auto transmission, 1. POWER which will hold the gears for a longer period during going up in gears for higher accelaration, and 2. HOLD when climbing hills or overtaking the hold button will drop down a gear and maintain that gear until button is released, just helps to maintain gear and accelaration instead of the gear dropping halfway through overtaking or climbing. Both of these buttons are on your shifter, Hold, on side of shifter at top and Power will be a button left hand side of base plate. Hope this helps, Iain.

You can 1st try to disconnect the batteries overnight then try pressing the "hold"button just under the shifter gear button . The one reason also is because you have a transmission problem which can really cost you. Engine check light on bcoz of a managerie of probs. with regards to the engine. Have OBD codes read to be sure.
