There are many names given to places where one worships a god. For example, Christians may worship in a "church", or "temple". This really depends on which branch of Christianity one follows, as there are other names given to places of Christian places of worship. Muslims worship Allah in a "mosque". Jewish people worship in a "synagogue". These are only some of the main stream religions. Across world people may worship their god or gods in "temples", "pagodas" or "shrines". The worship of God need not be confined to an inside area. God may be worshiped in any place that has been consecrated (made holy) to Him, which includes the outdoors or any natural setting. With particular regard to Christianity, Jesus said "Wherever there are two or three of you gathered in My Name, there am I also" (Matthew 18:20). It is not specified that "wherever", in the context of this quote, must be in a building.

Most of the time it is a holy place where a god is worshiped, but the word shrine can also infer that it is an object (historical or not) being praised. A shrine could also be the place of a sacred person or person who is praised because of their divinity or just from their fans. Hope this helped, Chao!
