Home Care as an industry provides hands on care that prior to the early 1980s had only been done in hospitals. The home care industry brought us back to pre-1930s delivery of service within the home, but with the added benefit of technologies and advances in medicine and medical care.
Home Care nurses provide:
- assessment
- nursing care planning
- nursing care delivery
- nursing re-assessment
- communication among all factions of the health team
- coordination of the health care team
The HC industry allows patients to remain in the comfort of their own home while receiving:
- personal (physical) care, e.g. ADLs
- help with I-ADLs
- specialized treatments such as IV therapy
- other skilled nursing services
- skilled services from PT, OT, etc.
As Home Care has developed since the 1980s, they have increasingly carved out a niche in the management of not only health care but of the health care team.
They also help reduce costs. In many USA States, it may cost three times as much per month to keep a patient in a nursing home for 30 days, compared to 30 days at home receiving the same kind of care through a Home Care agency.
