The Hopi do not exactly pray to someone for rain. The kachina are thought as beings who live on the San Francisco Peaks, who are also in some sense clouds, and rain, and corn that comes up from the rain and that becomes the flesh of people. The Hopi say that for six months the Kachina spirits live in the Hopi villages. After the Home Dance in late July or early August, the kachinas return to the San Francisco Peaks for six months. The Hopi say that these dances are vital for the continued harmony and balance of the world. It serves the further and vital purpose of bringing rain to the Hopi lands. When people train to wear the mask and dance in the plazas they become in a way the kachina for a while. They don't pray to kachina. This is just a general outline. Most of the practices are secret and becuase of insensitivity of outsiders to sacred practices more and more are secret over time. Also, each clan and kiva society has their own traditions which are secret to other Hopi.
