A 1983 Toyota Corolla was equipped with electronic ignition system, therefore it does not have points. However, if the engine has been modified such that the car DOES have a point-type ignition system, the typical point gap for an earlier model (i.e. years 1974-1977) would be .018"
Start by getting a manual for it and looking for the symptons your truck seems to have. Replace your plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, and pcv valve. Then check for good/clean fuel pump, and air cleaner. Also, when I got my 83 pu, the ignition timing was way off, so check it and make sure it's correct.
