Buddhism's effects are many and varied, depending on the form of Buddhism, how it is adopted, and the culture into which it is adopted. Like any other religious tradition it is often misunderstood, and when it is misinterpreted it can cause problems (for example, people thinking of "karma" as punishment and therefore being unwilling to help someone born with disabilities, which is a shocking misrepresentation of what the Buddha taught).
From my own small observation of a country known for Buddhism -- Tibet -- it would seem that the teachings, when well embedded into the culture, can be a source of resiliance and tolerance under extreme pressure and persecution.
