In light microscopy, oil immersion is a technique used to increase the resolution of a microscope. This is achieved by immersing both the objective lens and the specimen in a transparent oil of high refractive index, thereby increasing the numerical aperture of the objective lens.

Proper focal lenght provides the best resolution of object in focus. oil immersion is used so that light that passes from condensor of microscope onto objective lenses wont' get refracted. In other words, light with proper focal length passes directly to objective lense throug oil immersion, so that light won't deflected sideways before entering objective lense.
