If you look in the book of Daniel in the Old Testament, Daniel was fasting for a specific purpose but the angel that had his answer was delayed by Satan. Faith is the actuator of blessings from God besides obedience to God's word. Look through the ministry of Jesus and you will see this over and over again. Many of our problems begin in the spiritual part of us through unforgiveness, hatred, jealousy etc. If left unattended and unresolved, they get bigger and bigger until they come out in physical problems like Heart disease, high blood pressure etc.
It is not necessarily important to have a "spiritual side". Some people, called atheists, believe that the world and the life living on it were created by natural processes; that certain materials came together to create Earth, and other chemicals/materials/gases combined to generate a simple lifeform such as a plant or bacteria. From there, more complex variations became the early plants and animals, and eventually created US! (modern humans) Others may believe in a higher power creating the Earth and all the things on it, which is another theory. Some people believe it is important to be religious, that a higher power is watching over you and helping you in times of need. These things are all opinions, and cannot be proven or disproven. So belief in a higher spiritual power becomes a matter of faith.
