The Battle of Antietam was fought in 1863. This was one of the two battles fought on Union soil. Lee was close to Washington DC, and he was given the 'OK' to try to capture the Union capitol. this did not work out as planned.

After the bloody battle, Lincoln had enough. He decided to finally take a stand on slavery. Because of this battle, the Emancipation Proclamation was issued to free the slaves on the Confederate side.

To find out more on what the Proclamation stated, go to the search engine and ask!

Hopefully this will help those who ask about the Civil War.
