It allows ocean-going vessels to penetrate almost to the centre of North America, serving US cities such as Chicago and Duluth, as well as Canadian cities like Toronto, Hamilton and Thunder Bay. Because ocean-going vessels are able to load, for example, entire shiploads of Canadian wheat at Thunder Bay, and transport the load to any ocean port in the world, transportation costs are kept low, thus making Canadian products more competitive on world markets.
