Iron ore can be processed to an intermediate form that we call pig iron. It's a lot more pure than iron ore but not usually ready for use and needs further processing to become a useful metal. Typically it ranges from a little more than 3% carbon to a little less than 5% carbon. It also usually has a fair amount of silica and dross left in it too. Since it is intended as feed stock to furnaces for further processing the exact amounts of the contaminants is not that critical - they get mostly removed during the additional processing.

Cast iron generally has less carbon, silica, and dross left in it after processing. 1.8-4 wt% carbon and 1-3 wt% silicon (with the rest iron) are typical.

Pig iron is cast iron with a very high carbon content. Pig iron has 4% by weight or more. Cast iron has at least 2% carbon by weight.

Difference between cast iron and mild steel?

The main difference between cast iron and mild steel is the carbon content. Mild steel has a lower carbon content than cast iron. This makes cast iron brittle, while mild steel is much harder.
