It is a narrow strip of land connecting Mexico's central plateau with the Yucatan peninsula. Its narrowest point of 200 Kilometers (120 miles) acts as a land barrier between the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean, and before the Panama Canal, it was the most widely used land transportation route to ship cargo between both bodies of water.
