If you're asking because you're considering a stroll through the back country, you'd best get you a .45 Colt as your sidearm in the woods. There's bear there and remember, Mama bear don't take no mess when that cub's nearby and a bear is like a Porsche with AWD. There are wolves, coyotes, rams, elk, deers etc. If you plan on hiking around there on your own, you need to learn basic navigational skills, basic first-aid ( and have the equipment with you ), get a good, comfortable backpack that can handle your ready made meals, water supplies, bug repellant, hobo knives, fire starter ( get a small glass jar and fill it halfway with petroleum jelly then stuff some cotton balls into one. They'll soak it up and burn for hours! However, do not use them as light/flame sources INSIDE your tent! Make sure, especially if you're very inexerpienced out in Nature that you understand this one rule first and drive it into your head: Mother Nature is not sentimental for your life So be prepared to go into the country well trained, well stocked, and never, ever, ever travel by night in unfamiliar territory. Not sure if they have wolverines in Col, but if they do you def want to avoid them. The rest is stuff like fisher cats, squirrels, rabbit, turkey, all sorts of flying birds, and lots of brook trout. And out there, particulary come Winter, weather patterns can blow up fast so make sure your tent is water REPELLANT and your boots, hat, and raincoat are too. Beware when walking on wet leaves or rocks - ALWAYS. Get a terrain map and a pocket compass..a good mil spec one you find easy to read and learn ( you MUST learn how to triangulate your postion and at night tie, take astronomical notes. Always double check every 30 minutes ( check your first set of bearings ) against where you are at by that time and make the corrections you need to make. Also, in the event you get lost PLEASE DO NOT KEEP WANDERING AROUND. Carry a flare gun in your pack in the event your cell phone loses the GPS signal or batteries die. And always, always, always check your planned path in with the forrest service and your entry and exit days so peple will know that if you don't show up they can send out S&R to find you. Be smart....tools, food, water, first aid, a book you like ( preferably one that says,"Colorado Backcountry hiking for Noobs". Only fools rush into the wild.
