It was never part of the Louisiana Territory. The land in the Louisiana Purchase was divided in 1804 into a southern part, the Territory of Orleans, and a huge northern part, the District of Louisiana, later called Louisiana Territory. The Territory of Orleans became the State of Louisiana in 1812. In order to avoid confusion with the State of Louisiana, the Louisiana Territory was renamed at that time as Missouri Territory.
