If you don't have a concealed carry permit, and wish to buy a handgun, you must buy handgun permits through your County Sheriff's Office - you can buy five initially, and then up to five more for the year. You must also be 21 for these permits.
Technically, North Carolina does approve NFA permits (for full auto firearms, short-barreled rifles and shotguns, suppressors, etc.).... but they sorta don't if you don't have an FFL with a Class III Special Occupational Tax stamp and a range for which you intend to rent those firearms at. You must also be 21 to apply for a permit for those.
Regular Title I firearms (regular rifles and shotguns) do not require a permit, and you can purchase them at 18.
