In addition to how it is made*, battery life depends a lot on how it is used. The more often it is discharged and the deeper it is discharged, the shorter it will last. If your car starts very quickly, you don't run the accessories much when the engine is off, and NEVER run the battery dead by mistake, then a battery might last 8 years or so.
Running the battery all the way down (say by leaving the lights on over night) is the worst. As a wild guess, doing this just once might cut the battery life in half. Also, batteries slowly discharge all by themselves over time. If you let a battery sit without charging it for a year or more, it might never work again.
The number of miles you drive doesn't directly effect how long the battery lasts, but the number of times you start the car does. So, if you commuted 50 miles (each way) to work, you might get 200,000 miles out of a battery. But, if you do the soccer mom routine, putting say 15 miles a day on the car but starting it 10 times, you might only get 15,000 miles form the same battery.
Note, I think there are only a half dozen or so companies that make all the auto batteries sold in the US. All the different names you see are just different labels put on the same batteries.
Their life span is 1-2 years on average.
