The thalamus and the hypothalamus are associated with parts of the cerebral cortex and deep nuclei of the cerebrum to form a complex known as the limbic system. the limbic system is involved in memory and in emotions such as sadness, happiness, anger and fear. It seems to regulate emotional behavior, especially behavior that enhances survival.

The sense of Olfaction or smell. Unlike the rest of the senses which are routed through the thalamus, olfaction goes through the olfactory cortex in the temporal lobe and to the limbic system which is associated with memory.
