You are limited only in terms of drive space, usually. This 'windows system restore' is handy to recover from bad program installs, spyware, some viruses etc, unless you frequently fill your computer's hard disk drives up [especially c:, the main HDD for most PC's]. DO NOT rely solely on this system restore, always back up your files, and after a year or two of having windows installed, you may need to reinstall the OS for good measure anyways. If your going to attempt a reinstall always make sure you have your WINDOWS CD/DVD handy, and any drivers you might need (video drivers, system drivers for motherboard like chipset and network [NIC] drivers, sound card drivers, and if you have a modem etc).

Back on terms... I'm telling you all this because - sometimes system restore FAILS, and it can leave you with a DEAD computer, or your files can be MISSING sometimes after a restore (yes, it WILL gladly erase your stuff sometimes, i have had it happen!). You do NOT want to have to take your computer to the local big box store only to have to pay 120 bucks to get it fixed... Not trying to fear monger I've just been doing this 15+ years and have had plenty of days spent repairing 'system restore murdered' computers. Keep your fingers crossed and make sure to keep your C:\ drive clean and clear of things you don't need, and you should be okay. One final note, if your PC runs out of space on that aforementioned drive, it will begin overwriting the oldest restore points first. LIKE I SAID BEFORE USING RESTORE, BACKUP YOUR WORK FILES FIRST. Good luck!

You can't. If they are still on the computer, you can open system restore and click "Choose a different restore point". Then click next, and in the bottom left hand corner of the windows, click "Show more restore points". If that doesn't work, they are gone. The OS will automatically delete old restore points.

What happens if you delete the system volume information folder?

The System Volume Information folder is where system restore information is held. I first came across it in Windows ME, it is found in all flavours of Windows XP and Windows Vista. It is a very underated/inderused Windows tool, I have found it to be a life saver many times, I create restore points before and after installing new drivers or software. I manually configure System Restore depending on the number and size of the hard drives on the system. Normally I will turn off System restore for non System Drives, Reserving 12% of a 250 Gig Data Drive is a lot of wasted space.
