The M9 pistol uses an "oscillating Block" locking system. At the moment of firing, the slide and barrel are locked together. They are both driven rearward by recoil- but after about 3mm of travel, the barrel tips down, unlocking from the slide, which continues to the rear. The m9 pistol uses a locking system known as a short-recoil system with a vertically tilting barrel.
The M9 pistol works on the principle of short recoil operation, whereby the force of the bullet leaving the weapon cause the slide to move rearward and out of battery to eject the spent shell casing and strip a new round from the magazine through the force of the recoil spring.
Slide is pulled to the rear and stop is engaged by hand.
Condition 2, does not apply to the M9 Service Pistol.
