Energy that we get from the food we eat is measured in calories. We need some high-calorie food for energy, but if we eat too much our bodies store the extra as fat. That's it for calories, but to be healthy you need good NUTRITION. BTW, long-distance cyclists in the Tour de France burn about 11,000 calories a day, and burn at least 1,000 calories per hour while cycling.

Calories are energy for the body. When a person eats or drinks, they consume calories (the only exception is pure water, which is necessary to hydrate the body). These calories are stored in the body and used as fuel. Even while sleeping, the body needs energy/calories just to allow for normal functions like maintaining internal body heat, the heart to keep pumping, and breathing. When a person moves, muscles burn energy to allow for movement.
