Shop shelves are usually stocked with the newest produce towards the back, and the older stock to the front. This means that the store shouldn't need to throw out 'outdated' items, because they should usually be sold first. Watch the workers stoking the shelves in the bakery section in a supermarket - and you'll see them place the freshly-baked loaves to the back of the shelves - leaving the slightly older bread to the front. Most customers assume all the bread is fresh that day - and rarely check the dates on the labels.
