How many times you can do a liver transplant?

As many as necessary, depending on patient. On an elderly patient, or a patient with significant other co-morbidities (other health problems) which would not be 'cured' by a liver transplant, the surgery could be considered more risky (i.e higher risk of death). If the surgery was considered very high risk (e.g elderly patient with a significant heart problem), some hospitals may not consider doing the re-transplant operation. However, if the patient is still expected to have a good quality of life after (however many) re-transplants, re-transplanting will still be considered, and is usually performed. (Typically, the patient will give up having transplants before the hospital refuses to perform them.) The main problem with re-transplanting is build up of scar tissue around the site - this leads to high levels of blood loss during surgery, which makes each successive re-transplant higher risk than the previous. But it is not impossible to live a normal life after a few liver re-transplants :)

What is an autologous transplantation?

Autologous transplantation is a type of stem cell transplant where a patient's own stem cells are used. These stem cells are collected from the patient before they undergo intensive treatment like chemotherapy or radiation, and then reintroduced into the patient's body to help rebuild healthy cells after the treatment. This method reduces the risk of rejection and complications that can occur with donor transplants.

How can changes in mental function increase a patient's risk accident and injury?

Changes in mental function can impair decision-making, concentration, and coordination, increasing the risk of accidents and injuries. This can manifest as confusion, memory problems, or slowed reaction times, which can lead to falls, motor vehicle accidents, or other types of injuries. It is important to address these changes promptly to minimize the risk to the patient's safety.

What does the medical terminology 'flight risk' mean?

"Flight risk" in medical records means "Patient might run away, leave without notice." A risk is a possibility that carries a level of danger of a negative outcome. So, for example, if a patient is a "Fall Risk", the patient's mental or physical condition carries a level of danger that could make the patient apt to fall if allowed up without assistance. A patient whose mental or emotional condition carries a level of danger that could make the patient decide to leave or run away, or to wander away (whether with or without pre-planning of the act) would be a "Flight Risk". However, the phrase flight risk is more often used in medical documentation about someone who is on a psych unit or is under police custody while a patient in a hospital.
