Protons and neutrons have a mass of approximately 1 amu (atomic mass unit). The electrons way so little that we usually do not count their mass. To find the Atomic Mass, you need to add the number of protons to the number of neutrons in an atom.

Measured in amu (Atomic Mass Units):

Neutron: 1.008664916

Proton: 1.007276466812

Widely accepted as both being 1 amu

Where are protons found in the nucleus of an atom?

Protons, and neutrons make up the nucleus of an atom. The nucleus is the centre of an atom where most of the mass is found. Protons are positively charged, neutrons have no charge.

What information does the atomic mass of an elemt provide?

the number of protons and neutrons in an atom. Atomic mass is found by adding together the individual masses of the numbers of protons, neutrons, and electrons in the atom. --> Atomic Mass = protons + neutrons

Where is most of the atoms mass found?

An atom's mass is concentrated in its nucleus, which is located in the center of the atom. Protons and neutrons within the nucleus are responsible for its mass; the electrons, which are located outside of the nucleus, don't contribute to the mass of the atom.
