It depends on the rating of the hand drill. I.e. 1/4" 3/8" 1/2" etc..

I have 3/4 inch bits that are reduced at the shank to fit a 1/2 chuck. -I've known people who have even larger reduced shank drill bits, which leads me to believe there really is no "max size", -just what practicality dictates.

There is no theoretical maximum, it is dependent on power to rotate it
