In Dragnet, they just wanted the facts. In the courts we also assume the person on the witness stand is telling the truth along with the facts...but then there is that grey area. Lets say I was your friend and you asked me how my day was yesterday. I tell you about meeting up with co-workers for lunch, dinner with a girl and a few drinks at the bar to top it all off. What i didn't tell you, or omitted from the story, was that the girl I met for dinner was your girlfriend and that her and I have been seeing each other behind your back for the past month. In essence, I was 'lying by omission' or just not telling the complete story.
