k is short for 'kilo'. If someone says '5k', they are not giving any information of the unit and are probably implying it in what they are telling you. For example,

"It cost me 5k to repair my car" = $ 5000.

"I ran 5k in 52 minutes" = 5 km. (kilometres)

Strangely, people don't tend to use 'k' when talking about weight, ("I lost 3 kilos in 2 months") or voltage ("Be careful! That cable is at 15 kilovolts")
