The purpose of Wiki is to help people understand things he or she knows nothing about. Users ask question while other users answer them to the best of their knowledge. The main feature that separates Wiki sites from other encyclopedia-type sites is that the users are able to make contributions to any article on a Wiki, such as adding or improving information, or to build up a community where anyone is free to edit.

For educational purposes.

Wiki adds a more personal touch to your question by getting answers in real time from real people. This could have an advantage as the information presented is more likely to be up to date.

"Wiki" basically means that users can answer questions and others can edit/improve. The word "Wiki" generally refers to anything that can be freely edited by the public

According to Ward Cunningham, the developer of the first Wiki web:

"Wiki wiki is the first Hawai'ian term I learned on my first visit to the islands. The airport counter agent directed me to take the wiki wiki bus between terminals. I said what? He explained that wiki wiki meant quick. I was to find the quick bus. I did pick up a book about the language before my return home. I learned many things from this but wiki wiki is the word that sticks the most.

"I thought 'wiki wiki web" was more fun to say than "quick web", no mater what pronunciation is used. The name "quick web" would have been appropriate for a system that makes web pages quickly. Microsoft's "quick basic" was a precedent for such a name. I chose to call the technology WikiWikiWeb. I used exactly this spacing and capitalization because the technology would then recognize the term as a hyperlink. "

A wiki is a site that allows user to collaboratively add content.

The first person to set up a wiki website borrowed the term "wiki" from Hawaiian where it means "fast." Having users contribute content is much faster than having to create and edit all the content yourself, which is why he used the word, presumably.
