"Seven Seas" is the ancient term for "all the oceans in the world." In ancient Greece, which is where we got the term, this included all of the seas around Greece: the Adriatic, the Mediterranean, the Black, the Caspian, the Arabian, the Red, and also the Persian Gulf. Nowadays, we realize that there are more seas than that, but the main oceans are the North and South Atlantic, North and South Pacific, Arctic, Indian, and Southern (Antarctic).

This is a very ancient term, used in Sumaria as early as 2300BC. In the 9th Century a Muslim author wrote that to get to China you must cross the seven seas. The seas being the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Khambhat, the Bay of Bengal, the Strait of Malacca, the Singapore Strait, the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea. Later the Romans used the phrase, although the water they referred to was not necessarily 'sea'. The phrase is used in 'The History of Venice, although it signified nautical skill. Medieval literature used the term referring to a well traveled sailor. In modern times , geographical classification includes areas of water such as North Pacific Ocean, South Pacific Ocean, North and South Atlantic, The Indian ocean, The Southern Ocean and the Arctic Ocean. The term may well mean many things, but above all, it refers to a person who is well traveled
