While an ultrasound examination is being done, there is a visual image that is captured as pictures showing the structures that are being examined by the sound wave technology. These video-taped images are recorded by the technologist performing the ultrasound so that a physician can review the images and interpret the test results for diagnostic purposes.
In pregnancy, ultrasound "pictures" are taken of the fetus and these are recorded for the same reasons above, however, these recordings are also provided to the pregnant woman as her very first "baby" pictures.
