The progressive loss of lung function caused by enlargement of the alveoli as a result of the loss of elasticity is called Emphysema, or COPD.
Emphysema ( em-fih-SEE-mah )
The lung disease emphysema results in the breakdown of elastin in the connective tissues in the lungs. The alveolar walls get broken down so that instead of having lots of little ones to maximise surface area and allow adequate gas exchange, we now have fewer, larger ones that offer a much lower surface area. This means less oxygen gets across and is why you see sufferers out of breath or on oxygen. Air becomes trapped and therefore useless.

"Barrel Chest" can be caused by two main factors:

  1. osteoarthritis can cause the rib joints to freeze in the chest-expanded shape. The intercostal muscles also stiffen with calcium deposits when we age.
  2. COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) is an umbrella term for a group of lung problems. In this situation the lungs are overinflated much of the time giving the chest an expanded appearance.
  3. emphysema (part of COPD), the progressive loss of lung tissue due to trauma or a disease process, has been the traditional, though not only, cause of barrel chest.
