The moral lesson from the story of Adam and Eve is respect to one's creator and parents. The only warning that God gave to Adam and Eve was not to eat of the forbidden fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Eve and then Adam were tempted by a sinister snake. They knew that what they had was due to God's generosity and kindness. But they went ahead and knowingly broke divine law. They at least could have discussed The Temptations with God instead of just becoming disrespectful law breakers.

For some Christians, the story of Adam and Eve is a historically accurate account of the creation of man, and of his fall from righteousness. For others, it is a morality story that can be considered factual in that it tells of human nature - we think we know best but our arrogance has caused all sorts of problems throughout history.

Why do Christians believe the story of Adam and Eve to be symbolic?

AnswerNot all Christians believe the story of Adam and Eve to be symbolic. Some Christians still believe that the story is literally true. However, the story conflicts so totally with scientific knowledge, and is so internally inconsistent, that many accept that it can not be literally true. The easiest alternative is to think of it as symbolic.AnswerThere are many different aspects to the Eve/Adam story. One reason that many Christians believe the story to be symbolic is because it raises serious questions about how they managed to reproduce and people the earth. There would have had to be incest involved. Another reason it's viewed as symbolic is that it condemns woman for seeking knowledge. Women seeking knowledge would have been unacceptable during the time period it was written therefore it would have been appropriately symbolic for that time and culture.
