It depends on what you're asking. If you're inquiring as to what New York State will pay its state worker's, then I believe the rate is .52 cents per mile. However, New York State does not have a requirement as to what employers must pay their own employees for mileage, so this is left at the discretion of employers. I've heard most pay about .17/mile. If you consider that gas averages out at about $3/gallon, with most cars getting a minimum of 20 highway miles per gallon, then .15 cents would be the break even point, and anything more than that would be an additional courtesy. Most employers will use the current rate of gas divided by 20 miles per gallon (the average for most standard vehicles, those most these days get substantially better mileage).

According to our accountant the suggested rate in 2011 was 26 cents per gallon
