The answer is not easy because there are so many factors that contribute to how we stay hydrated; meaning having enough water in our bodies. Also, it depends on the length of time beyond just a single day. If you didn't drink water for a whole day, you probably wouldn't die unless you were in a desert and had no shelter. But you could go for many days, weeks, months, or even years being slightly de-hydrated with low levels of water in your body before any major diseases would set in. To give you a simple answer, drink water more often than only when you're thirsty. Another way to guage your water intake is if your pee looks clear and light yellow. If it starts to look dark yellow, you need to drink more water.

If a population of fish in a lake is allowed to reproduce without anything to control this the fish population will stop growing What basic need are the fish competing for?

The fish will be competing for food, as a large number of fish need a large amount of food to keep them alive. As the population grows, the amount of food in excess will shrink, until there is only enough food for the fish already alive. When this happens, the weaker fish will die, as the stronger fish will outcompete them for the food.
