Long enough so the load can't contact the aircraft.

Helicopter design specs refer to this as an External Load. Commonly referred to as a "sling load". Some helicopters use a hoist to lift objects such as a Search & Rescue helicopter. This is a hoist load.
The Supporting unit is responsible for the initial rigging of a sling load. It is then the Load Master's responsibility to check the load for deficiencies before actually shipping it .
In large helicopters that's possible. it depends entirely on how it has been rigged.

By weight.. one strap or chain per 5,000 loads max, and additional straps or chains if you feel they're necessary. Length of the load also determines number of straps, and there should be at least one for every five to six feet of load length minimum, regardless of the weight.
The minimum breaking load of a wire rope refers to the minimum load required to break the rope under laboratory conditions. It is important to consider this specification when selecting a wire rope for lifting or pulling applications to ensure safety and optimal performance. The minimum breaking load is typically expressed in tons, pounds, or kilograms depending on the standard used.
A big one.
Standard load is roughly 400 punds or 60 gallons
