it is estimated a staggering 83% of people give in to peer pressure... sadly 60% of statistics are made up...
Some people give in to peer pressure because they want to be liked and to fit in. Also they worry about other people making fun of them if they don't go along with the group. They could also be curious to try something new that others are doing.
If its negative peer pressure, like people are telling you that you're going to do bad, then it can give you negative thoughts about your own performance which will make you very nervous and so you'll probably mess up. If its positive peer pressure, like someone encouraging or convincing you, then it can give you positive thoughts and help you feel confident about your performance.

Peer pressure is the result of performing an act or making a choice about something which was not by your own judgement. One of the most common results of peer pressure is smoking. A lot of people give into 'peer pressure' in order to maintain a social status, or look good or keep friends.
A possible common motivator for a person to get out and meet people could be boredom. Meeting new people who are like minded and enjoy the same activities would give a person a reason to get together with a group of people, and possibly enjoy the activity more.
I think the possibility of retaliation is definitely one reason. The second is nobody wants to drop a dime on their own family! LOL
