The B1 and B2 are probably the most dangerous, as they are the most advanced; however the B52 Stratofortress bomber can carry more ordnance (a single B52 carried one hundred and eight 750 pound bombs when it struck North Vietnam during the Vietnam War-nearly 10 times more than a single WWII B17 Flying Fortress bomber). However, 21st century B52's may no longer have that heavy payload capability, due to age/metal fatique, and advanced avionics that have been installed in them; most, if not all, have been converted to use/launch smart missiles/bombs such as cruise missiles. The Stratofortress fought it's first war in Vietnam, and approximately 30 were lost in that conflict, most from the Christmas Bombing campaign (Operation Linebacker II) in December 1972. Nearly all of the combat losses were from SAMs (Surface to Air Missiles) although NVAF pilot MAJ. Pham Tuan flying a MiG-21 claimed a B52 with an air to air missile on 26 December 1972. The USAF disputed that aerial kill to a MiG21 and credited the loss to a SAM.
