We have no way of reading your teacher's mind to guess what he or she might have been thinking in asking such a nebulous question as this. The answer your teacher is expecting is probably contained within your reading assigment, and I strongly recommend that you search it to avoid losing points.

However, the primary thing (in my opinion) that you need to remember when conducting a controlled experiment is to control the experiment. Don't introduce multiple variables unless you have to, make the experiment "double-blind" to the extent possible (if your control group is getting sugar cubes while the experimental group is getting something that tastes like cotton balls dipped in alum, somebody's gonna notice), et cetera.

Only test one variable.

I had a friend in school who decided to test this hypothesis: plants grow better inside than outside. He got three seeds. He planted one on the north side of his house, one on the south side and one in a pot in his bedroom window, which was on the south side of the house. Then he watered and fertilized the indoor plant but left the outdoor ones alone.

So we have four variables here:

First, the temperature in his house was stable; the temperature outside changed.

Second, the indoor plant got regular water; the outdoor plants got rained on occasionally.

Third, the outdoor plants got more sunlight than the indoor one did.

And fourth, the indoor plant was getting fertilizer the outdoor plants weren't.

I don't know the results of the experiment because he used marijuana seeds and someone stole the outdoor plants.

You must control all of the variables except for the one you are testing. Therefore, you would need a minimum of two identical objects for such an experiment
