Because the city was invaded by a seafaring people who worshipped or were governed by the God of the Sea. The God of the Sea being the Law of The Sea.
When the captain of the ship set foot on the land he represented the Law or God of the Sea so legally in affect the land sank to the bottom of the sea but not literally or immediately, but in time the legal state became a literal state and the land literally sank to the bottom of the sea, or the sea for some phenomonal natural reason rose and the land went underwater and naturally washed away by centuries of water erosion.

∙ 12y agoTruly the only way the we know of Atlantis is from a book that Plato ( a very famous philosopher) wrote. In his book he included the disappearance of a place called Atlantis. This place was very modern and had more technology than we could ever dream of. But after and unfortunate super tsunami, Atlantis was submerged underneath the depths of an ocean. There are several places that have been said to be where Atlantis is. But it has yet to be found. We think that we have found an ancient computer like device in Iceland and that is it possibly where Atlantis may be. Now scientist are wondering if Plato might have been crazy, but we will never know. This is one of the greatest mysteries of all time.

Where is the city and continent of atlantis?
Plato mentions the continent of Atlantis, which was supposed to be west of the Mediterranean, "the size of Libya and Asia" - Which means the size of North Africa and the Middle East. Many people believe this to be South America. Atlantis was also supposed to be the capital city of the most powerful of the ten kingdoms of the continent of Atlantis. So yes, it can be said that it is a continent.

Technically speaking no one actually knows whether or not Atlantis was real. However it was said to be a lost civilization that was to be far more advanced then the world today.
