Echo was a nymph who distracted Hera while Zeus and one of his many lovers made their escape. In her anger, Hera cursed her to only repeat what others said, since it was her lively tongue that distracted Hera in the first place. Echo fell in love with Narcissus, but couldn't tell him. When he died, she wasted away, leaving only her voice.
