Why did the North and South have the Civil War?

The North and South fought the Civil War because the South lived on slavery and could not live without it, the north on the other hand did not like slavery. They also fought the war because the South seceded after Lincoln became president. Seceded means that they separated from the country and became their own country, with their own name, and government. They seceded because they felt useless while Lincoln was in power, he did not like slavery so the South did not stand a chance against him. The North was also far more advanced than the South. The South was still using rivers for transportation, and fields for growing things. The North was already using railroads and factories.

What was te main cause of the civil war?

There is no main cause of the Civil War. Southerners would tell you that it was "'Cause them dang Yankees won't let us live the way we live," while Abolitionist would say that it wat to free the slaves. Carolinians would say that it was because of "States' Rights." People would say that it was caused by the south seceeding, or other people would try to explain why the south seceeded. People study this stuff in colege, get a PhD in it, and still can't explain the main reason, but I have given you a few exmples.

Did the Confederacy secede from the union for slavery?

No. At the beginning, Lincoln was not fighting an Abolitionist war. He had been elected on a ticket of no new slave-states, so the South was facing the prospect of being permanently outvoted in Congress. That is why they seceded, believing that the cotton revenues would be enough to live on. Only after January 1863 did it become an Abolitionist war, with the Emancipation Proclamation.
